The Most Common Hybrid Clubs Found in a Golf Bag

Since the toughest clubs for most players, including very good ones, to hit are the 2, 3, or 4 irons and a fairway 3-wood, the most common hybrid clubs found in most bags are those designed to replace these. The point of the hybrid club is to combine a shorter shaft than these clubs typically have with greater loft and a club head that packs the punch to achieve good distance on the shot. In short, hybrid clubs give the golfer the distance, height, and backspin on the ball that most simply cannot get with long irons and standard fairway woods.

Since that is the purpose of the hybrid, the most common ones you’ll find in a bag are the 2, 3, and 5 hybrids. While some manufacturers designate their hybrids by loft, most are now using a number system, with the number corresponding to the iron it is designed to replace. The 2-hybrid sports 18 degrees of loft, about the same as a 2-iron or 5-wood. It is much easier to hit than either of those clubs, and some golfers use it off of the tee in place of a driver, not just from the fairway or rough.
The 3-hybrid is lofted at 21 degrees and many golfers use this club primarily from the fairway. The 5-hybrid has 27 degrees of loft and golfers employ it mostly from the rough, since it will get the ball up quickly. Many also pull out the 5-hybrid on longer approach shots when they need a bit more muscle, but also want to put loft and spin on the ball.

By some accounts, 65% of professionals are carrying at least one hybrid. That’s an astounding number, and makes these innovative clubs worth a look for golfers of all skill levels.
